National Certificate in Recreation and Sport Level 3



Who is this qualification for?

This qualification develops skills and abilities for those wanting to deliver a wide range of recreation programmes and events. You will learn about:

  • Planning and running recreation programmes
  • Delivering activities for specific target groups
  • Working in a team
  • Providing great customer service
  • Health, safety and hazard management.

This qualification will take up to 8 months to complete.

What's involved?

This qualification can be achieved by choosing one of the five pathways:

  • Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC)
  • Recreation Coordinator
  • Out of School Care (OSCAR)
  • Sport Coordinator (coming soon!)
  • Outdoor Activity Supervisor.
     

 

EDUCATION OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM (EOTC)

 

This qualification is for EOTC teachers and coordinators in schools, kura or private contractors providing these services to schools.

 

It consists of two modules:

  • EOTC and You
  • Running EOTC Events and Activities.

These modules focus on:

  • Describing the pinciples and values of EOTC in the curriculum and in your school
  • Managing hazards and risks
  • Planning, delivering and evaluating safe and rewarding EOTC activities and events
  • Teamwork and listening skills
  • Dealing with different types of behaviour.

This qualification works hand-in-hand with the Ministry of Education's EOTC Guidelines - Bringing the Curriculum Alive.

 

Cost for the EOTC qualification enrolment, resources and assessment is $440.00 + GST.

  • Recreation Planning

OUT OF SCHOOL CARE (OSCAR)

 

You will complete four modules:

  • Activity planning and facilitation
    This module focuses on planning programmes and activities, understanding the needs of children and managing time
  • Getting active with children
    Understanding the different stages of children’s growth and development and to ensure they play safely
  • Understanding your customers
    Providing great service and care
  • Playing your part - supervision, teamwork and professional development
    Understanding your roles and responsibilities working in Out of School Care.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITY SUPERVISOR

 

This qualification is designed especially for people (paid or voluntary) whose role includes supervising activities in low-risk (front country) outdoor environments.

 

This practical, hands-on qualification can be completed while you work. It is based around two modules, each with its own learning materials and assessment:

 

Module 1:

  • Understanding your own role, and the behaviours expected of you
  • How different groups/people participate in recreation
  • Understanding different types of behaviour
  • Working with people from different cultures
  • Being an effective listener and a good team player.

 

Module 2:

  • Identifying and managing hazards and risks
  • Preventing and managing injuries in outdoor activities
  • Using information about the weather
  • Planning, running and reviewing activities.
