Qualification development status

 

 

 

Qualifications approved for listing on the NZQF

 

In October 2016 NZQA approved the Aquatics suite of qualifications for listing on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF).

NZ Certificate in Aquatics (Level 3) with strands in Pool Lifeguard, Swim and Water Safety Teacher, and Aquafitness Instructor [Ref: 3503]

 

NZ Certificate in Aquatics (Senior Pool Lifeguard) (Level 4) [Ref: 3506]

 

NZ Certificate in Aquatics (Specialised Swim and Water Safety Teacher) (Level 4) with strands in Early Childhood Swimmers, Adult Swimmers, Adaptive Aquatics, and Stroke Mechanics [Ref: 3507]

       

 

NZ Certificate in Aquatic Treatment Systems (Level 4) [Ref: 3504]

 
Unit standard consultation (Level 3)

 

A set of unit standards developed to align with the New Zealand Certificate in Aquatics (Level 3) with strands in Pool Lifeguard, Swim and Water Safety Teacher, and Aquafitness Instructor [Ref: 3503] were consulted on during November-December 2016.

 

The draft unit standards are:

 

Core1: 

Operate professionally and promote safe enjoyable experiences in an aquatic facility 
PL1: Recognise and respond to simulated emergencies and apply rescue techniques as a pool lifeguard in an aquatic facility
PL2: Monitor hazards and risks and supervise customers as a pool lifeguard in an aquatic facility 
ST1: Plan, deliver and review swimming and water safety lessons
AF1: Plan and review an Aqua fitness class in an aquatic facility
AF2: Instruct an aquafitness class

 

PL = Pool Lifeguard
ST = Swim and Water Safety Teacher

AF = Aquafitness Instructor

 

These unit standards cover core skills and knowledge in promoting safe enjoyable customer experiences, safety at work, and operating professionally as well as specific skills required to operate as pool lifeguards, swim and water safety teachers, and aquafitness instructors in an aquatic facility.

Stage 2 consultation

 

Consultation on the proposed Aquatics suite of qualifications was held from 17 August to 6 September 2015.

 

The three NZ Certificates in Aquatics qualifications are designed for those working in pool lifeguard or swim educator roles within the aquatics industry, and the NZ Certificate in Aquatic Treatment Systems qualification is designed for those working in water quality testing and treatment roles within aquatic environments.
