Moderation is a Quality Assurance System designed to achieve valid, fair and consistent assessment decisions across all assessors, in all situations.
Moderation also provides a vehicle to:
- Identify where there is a need to improve assessment.
- Interpret standards and provide opportunity to adjust them in the future.
- Provide feedback on the quality of unit standards.
Moderation has two main components:
- Internal moderation - the process of ensuring consistency with the national standards and between Skills Active assessors.
- External moderation - the process run to ensure national consistency between tertiary education organisation (TEO's) including public and private tertiary education providers, industry training organisations, government training organisations, and school's.
The Skills Active Moderation System aim is to be demonstative of the "Best Practice Moderation Principles" (developed by The Association of Polytechnics in New Zealand, The Industry Training Federation and New Zealand Association of Private Education Providers). These documents are available below.
