Philamena has been working for Hamilton City Council almost 10 years. Over the years she has worked herself up the ladder. She started as a gym instructor which then led to personal training. From there to Assistant Manager and more recently for the past 6 years – Health & Fitness Manager.
Prior to working for Hamilton City Council Philamena worked at Melville High School as their Sports Co-ordinator. This was a great challenge for her, as this was a low decile school with many talented athletes that were not always financially well off. This pushed her out of comfort zone where she had to work, sometimes with a lack of resources. There were some big challenges but a great learning curve, however very rewarding to see students succeed.
Philamena has been involved within the Netball Waikato Region for 11 years both as a player and more recently as a coach. Over the past 7 years as a coach she has worked with Under 19, Under 21 and senior level. Her most recent involvement has been the Lois Muir Challenge team which involves the tier of players developing for ANZ level.
Over the past 4 years she has been off and on with maternity leave, with two new additions to her family (two boys 3 year old and 1 year old). This has not slowed her down in any means to further and better her career. Any and every opportunity that has come her way she has taken.
Every year Philamena focuses on different elements of her personal development and this year it has been about becoming more involved with various organisations. One advantage of working for a council organisation is that they have many various groups that she can represent on or become involved with. Her most recent involvement is joining an auditing team where she goes out to various units and critique and scrutinize their policies and procedures. This has been a great eye opener for her to see how others unit function and what works and what doesn’t work. She says "That it's even better when you can bring back best practices and implement into your own department." She says "That as part of local government they are currently reviewing many services and what is the best way the facility can function. Over the next two – three years there could be change and to be a part of this is learning in itself."
Philamena is known to want to do things now and get it done type of person. However she has learnt that good things take time and it doesn’t all happen over night. She says that she “truly believes that it’s not what you do; it’s the way that you do it”. “And you don’t need to burn bridges on your journey instead build pathways and links”.
