The Māori Sports Scholarship recognises promising young Māori sportspeople, and provides support for their endeavours in both the sporting and academic realms.
Since 1999, Skills Active, in partnership with Te Tohu Taakaro o Aotearoa Charitable Trust, has provided the Māori Sports scholarship for promising and outstanding Māori athletes in support of their sporting and academic careers.
The scholarship goes to a high-achieving young person who has demonstrated hard work and commitment through their involvement with a particular sport.
The award is open to all young athletes of Māori descent, aged between 16 and 20, who are combining both sport and study, and achieving outstanding results at a regional, national or international level.
The Skills Active judges are looking for sportspeople who exemplify some of the qualities highly prized by our industries, including the single-minded pursuit of excellence, dedication and resilience, and the ability to balance sport and life.
The Māori sports scholar receives $5000 towards their sporting and academic pursuits. The scholarship is presented at the Māori Sports Awards.
If you would like to nominate someone for this scholarship, please email us before 31 October.
Nominations should include a paragraph about the candidate and any relevant background, how they meet the eligibility criteria, and why they should be considered for the scholarship.
