Recreation Safety Auditing L6

Who is this qualification for?   

This qualification is for the industry heroes who help recreation organisations ensure they have systems in place keeping staff and participants safe at all times.

Calm, conscientious and detail-oriented, recreation safety auditors draw on industry experience and knowledge, as well as training in audit principles and processes, to gain an understanding of the businesses they audit.

Safety auditors critically assess the documents and processes that are in place, and provide mentoring and training to help organisations identify and address issues in their Safety Management Systems.

This qualification will be delivered and assessed on-the-job in a workplace within the sport and recreation industry.

Graduates of this qualification will be equipped to conduct recreation safety audits that meet the requirements of ISO19011:2011: Guidelines for auditing management systems.

Please note that to be eligible to complete this qualification, the trainee must be employed as a recreation safety auditor in the safety audit industry, and must have the opportunity in their role to complete Adventure Activity audits. 

What's involved?

This 55 credit-programme has core modules and two optional endorsements:

The core modules cover:

Auditing a recreation operation for compliance with the appropriate safety audit standard that applies to the recreation activities provided by the operator

Understanding audit principles, procedures and methods and applying these to a safety audit of a recreation organisation

Applying knowledge of legal and contractual requirements to a safety audit of a recreation organisation

Understanding recreation Safety Management Systems and their purpose, and applying these to the audit process

Mentoring and training safety managers operating in recreation organisations, including promoting an understanding of the indicators of a positive safety culture.

The Adventure Activities endorsement covers:

Understanding and applying the Safety Audit Standard for Adventure Activities

(This endorsement is a requirement for graduates who will be auditing adventure activities as defined by the Health and Safety at Work (Adventure Activities) Regulations 2016.)

The Incident and Accident Investigations endorsement covers:

Conducting incident and accident investigations in recreation situations.

This qualification is intended to take up to 10 months to complete

What are the costs?   

On-job training costs workplaces both time and resources. It can mean covering registration fees, learning and assessment resources, allocating time for training, and having an appropriate assessment pathway available.  

Total costs for trainees will vary depending on how the qualification is delivered, how it is assessed and how much support the workplace can provide.
