1 Exercise Foundations

This programme was tailor-made to support people beginning their exercise career.

Completing the Exercise Foundations programme will equip you to assist people using a gym, fitness facility or engaging in community exercise.

To enrol in this programme, you need to be working in an exercise facility or organisation, in a paid job, self-employed, or as a volunteer with regular and consistent shifts.

This 40-credit programme is designed to be completed in about 6 months.

You'll be trained, observed and assessed in the workplace.

Key learning areas include:

  • Customer service and professionalism
  • Basic exercise physiology and anatomy
  • Managing your own exercise plan for personal health and wellbeing
  • Health and safety.

Achieving the Exercise Foundations Programme is equivalent to achieving the New Zealand Certificate in Sport, Exercise and Leisure Operations.

By completing this programme you will be eligible to register with the New Zealand Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs), at the level of Exercise Assistant.

Exercise Foundations is part of the Apprenticeship - Exercise Professional (Level 4). After completing the certificate, contact us if you're interested in taking your career up a level and enrolling in the apprenticeship.
