Skills Active supports sport fans to step up
May 8, 2020
Aspiring sport coaches and refs just got a boost, with the launch of two new qualifications from Skills Active Aotearoa, the transitional industry training organisation for sport.
The New Zealand Certificate in Sport Coaching and the New Zealand Certificate in Sport Officiating are Level 3 qualifications aimed at trainees working in the sport sector. These hands-on programmes are designed to be completed in real-life settings, out on the field, the courts or wherever sport happens. They are open to paid workers, and volunteers who are coaching or officiating on a regular roster.
Developed in consultation with the sport industry, these certificates cover everything the trainee needs to know about coaching or officiating their chosen code.
They are designed for those at the beginning of their coaching or officiating journey, to furnish them with the latest skills and knowledge, and give them a solid grounding for their professional practice.
“As we begin to emerge from the higher levels of the Covid-19 lockdown, it will be especially important to have a strong, sustainable sport sector, starting from the ground up,” says Skills Active managing director Butch Bradley.
“New Zealand has a legion of sport fans, many of whom freely give their time to serve as coaches and refs at grassroots level,” Mr Bradley adds.
“It’s this foundation of committed supporters that will help the sport industry to come back stronger than ever, after the disruption of the Covid-19 pandemic. We are thrilled to play a small part, through helping our coaches and officials to upskill and share their passion for their sport.”
