Apprenticeship Senior PoolLifeguard L4

Who is this apprenticeship for?  

This apprenticeship suits lifeguards who want advanced knowledge and experience in leading lifeguard shifts and teams in aquatic facility environments.    

Lifeguards are observant, patient, and  great with people. They have the skills and confidence to act in a quick, responsible and calm manner.  A senior lifeguard has all of these characteristics, along with strong leadership and communication skills. 

This apprenticeship will be delivered on-the-job at the pool, and assessments will be completed online.

Coming out of this qualification, a senior pool lifeguard will have in-depth lifeguarding skills, and be armed with the knowledge required to supervise, coordinate and educate pool staff.   

What's involved?

This 120-credit apprenticeship covers the following areas:

Coordinating pool lifeguard plans and adapting shifts 

Applying advanced lifeguarding skills and aquatic supervision and rescue techniques 

Supervising health and safety procedures, risk assessment plans and pool water quality checks 

Responding to customer needs in an aquatic facility.  

This qualification is designed to be completed in 2 years.  

Programme structure

The programme is made up of the following unit standards:

Unit standard 30123 Recognise and respond to simulated emergencies and apply rescue techniques as a pool lifeguard in an aquatic facility L3 10 credits
Unit standard 30124 Supervise customers and maintain safety as a pool lifeguard in an aquatic facility L3 5 credits
Unit standard 29848 Demonstrate knowledge of safe work procedures and practices in a recreation workplace L3 5 credits
Unit standard 30122 Operate professionally and promote safe, enjoyable experiences in an aquatic facility L3 15 credits
Unit standard 29849 Demonstrate knowledge of professional practice in a recreation workplace L3 5 credits
Unit standard 31243 Maintain customer engagement, service and safety in an aquatic environment L4 15 credits
Unit standard 31244 Demonstrate knowledge of user groups and barriers to participation in a facility L4 15 credits
Unit standard 31540 Supervise lifeguard operations in an aquatic environment L4 20 credits
Unit standard 31541 Demonstrate knowledge of the role and responsibilities of a senior pool lifeguard L4 10 credits
Unit standard 31912 Manage major emergency responses in an aquatic facility L4 10 credits
Unit standard 25981 Maintain water quality in a basic public pool L4 10 credits

What are the costs?

On-job training costs workplaces both time and resources. It can mean covering registration fees, learning and assessment resources, allocating time for training, and having an appropriate assessment pathway available.  

Total costs for apprentices will vary depending on how the qualification is delivered, how it is assessed and how much support the workplace can provide.
