Who is this elective for?

This elective unit standard is designed to be completed within the New Zealand Certificate in Freestyle Group Exercise (Level 4).

Yoga instructors are calm, creative and grounded. They use their understanding of yogic philosophy and practice to develop classes that leave students in a higher state of bliss.

This elective is delivered and assessed on-the-job in an exercise industry workplace. Please note that you will need access to a qualified yoga teacher to provide you with support and mentoring.

By completing this elective, a budding yogi will gain foundational knowledge and skills that will help them continue on a journey towards becoming a yoga instructor. 

Did you know: Those trainees who complete the Skills Active yoga elective can opt to do some further training (up to a maximum of 12 hours) which will enable them to become a recognised Yoga Instructor through Yoga New Zealand. (Please note that the additional training and registration is not included in the cost of the yoga elective.)

What's involved?

This 12-credit elective is completed as part of the New Zealand Certificate in Freestyle Group Exercise (Level 4) and covers the following areas:

The underlying philosophy of yoga: Yoga terms, yogic body, key texts, yoga practice methods, yoga lineage

Basic yoga practice: Asana (techniques, benefits, and limitations), pranayama techniques, use of props

Health and safety requirements: Pre-screening and class planning

Instructing yoga as a holistic exercise class (practical): Asana demonstration and guidance, modifications based on ability, cueing and class management, participant safety, participant self-reflection and post class interaction.

 The full Freestyle Group Exercise qualification will take 8-12 months to complete.

What are the costs?

On-job training costs workplaces both time and resources. It can mean covering registration fees, learning and assessment resources, allocating time for training, and having an appropriate assessment pathway available.  

Total costs for trainees will vary depending on how the qualification is delivered, how it is assessed and how much support the workplace can provide.
