Who is this apprenticeship for?

This apprenticeship is for people instructing outdoor activities, specialising in at least two activities.

Multi-activity outdoor instructors have broad skills in the outdoors and love to share this passion with others. They understand the power of the outdoors to challenge people, nudge them out of their comfort zones, and build their confidence. They use their instruction and technical skills to guide people through outdoor activities.

This is a complex apprenticeship, which means it's comprised of two individual qualifications, packaged together. It's designed to be delivered and assessed on-the-job, in an outdoor recreation workplace. 

Apprenticeship graduates will come out of this qualification equipped to teach participants in at least two activities, such as mountain biking, kayaking or abseiling.

What's involved?

This 131- to 158-credit apprenticeship is comprised of two individual qualifications:

National Certificate in Outdoor Recreation (Leadership) (Level 3) with two strands:

Bush Walking


Mountain Biking

Sea Kayaking


Rock Climbing.

National Certificate in Outdoor Recreation (Outdoor Instructor) (Level 4-5) with one strand:



Rock Climbing


This apprenticeship is designed to be completed in 2 years.

What are the costs?   

On-job training costs workplaces both time and resources. It can mean covering registration fees, learning and assessment resources, allocating time for training, and having an appropriate assessment pathway available.  

Total costs for apprentices will vary depending on how the qualification is delivered, how it is assessed and how much support the workplace can provide.
