Who is this qualification for?   

This credited programme covers the foundation skills and knowledge needed for highly-skilled outdoor professionals instructing in the great outdoors. 

With outdoor instructors, learning is an adventure. They use their expertise to impart knowledge and skills to others, so that more people can master and enjoy outdoor activities.

This programme will be delivered and assessed online.

Graduates will be equipped with contemporary knowledge of outdoor instruction in dynamic environments.

Did you know: This is a standalone programme, but it can also be used as a  stepping stone to achieving the full New Zealand Certificate in Outdoor Instruction (Level 5).

What's involved?

This 20-credit programme covers:

Independently instructing safe and enjoyable activities in dynamic outdoor environments

Working within the safety management system of an organisation, including being able to assess and manage an emergency care situation

Role modelling the principles of kaitiakitanga

Applying pedagogical practices to create a sequenced programme of learning.

The programme is made up of the following unit standard:

Unit standard 30688 Demonstrate knowledge of instructing within an outdoor recreation activity L5 20 credits

What are the costs?

On-job training costs workplaces both time and resources. It can mean covering registration fees, learning and assessment resources, allocating time for training, and having an appropriate assessment pathway available.  

Total costs for trainees will vary depending on how the qualification is delivered, how it is assessed and how much support the workplace can provide.
