Outdoor Leadership L3 Kayaking

Who is this qualification for?  

This qualification is for people who independently lead beginner-level groups in outdoor activities.

Outdoor leaders are confident, responsible and love to share their passion for our beautiful environment. They use specific skills and knowledge to plan and manage trips so that all participants have safe and fun experiences.

This qualification is designed to be delivered on-the-job in the great outdoors.

Graduates of this qualification will be equipped to confidently lead groups of people participating in low-risk outdoor activities. 

Did you know: Once you've achieved your New Zealand Certificate in Outdoor Leadership, you will be registered with the New Zealand Register of Recreation Professionals. You can keep your registration current by re-registering every three years. 

What's involved?

This qualification has core modules, and two strands:

The core modules cover group leadership; activity planning; interpreting weather; and risk management in the outdoors.
The trainee chooses from the following strands:


Sea Kayaking

Please note - the Mountain Biking, Bushwalking, Abseiling and Rock Climbing strands for this qualification have been removed, and replaced with strands in the new New Zealand Certificate in Outdoor Leadership.
The qualification is designed to be completed in 8 months.

What are the costs?

 On-job training costs workplaces both time and resources. It can mean covering registration fees, learning and assessment resources, allocating time for training, and having an appropriate assessment pathway available.  

Total costs for trainees will vary depending on how the qualification is delivered, how it is assessed and how much support the workplace can provide.
